Chapter Eighteen

There was at first the element of surprise.

Then came a tipping point when the game changed. Suddenly your opponent woke up and realized you were serious, and your aim was dead on, and they were in your sights.

Was it triumph?

Maybe. There was a certain thrill they finally knew the score.

It could be that had gotten him the most satisfaction.

The killer had wondered about it now and then but put off the analysis.

He’d engaged in open warfare, and his enemy suddenly knew it.

* * *

If it wasn’t for his unsettled mind, life would be good.

New house, beautiful woman naked in his arms at night, the company coming along and making money . . .

Mick understood his mother’s need to desperately look toward some future joy rather than live in this moment, but he could live without the expectation he was going to make any sudden decisions right now. Amanda’s unexpected and violent death precluded any happiness.

The ring was very pretty in an antique setting and the diamond certainly more impressive than the one in the ring he’d held on to all these years, but his reunion with Samantha was tenuous at best given why it had happened.

He got out of his car and walked across the parking lot so he could wait by the doors because he didn’t want her outside alone for as long as it took to walk to his vehicle.

Five minutes later she came out in a hurry, carrying a box, and he straightened away from the brick wall. “Whoa, Ms. Hurricane. Can I carry your books as I walk you home?”

“Yes, thank you. Sorry I’m late. It’s tax season.” She handed over the box. “There’s some midnight oil with my name on it.”

“No problem. It has turned into a decent afternoon, so waiting was a chance to breathe in some fresh air.”

“My house or yours?”

“I found my wine glasses and also stopped and bought more of the beverage in question.”

She laughed. “That settles it, then. What am I cooking?”

“We’re having chili.”

“Hmm, with wine?”

“Sure. Why not?”

She sent him a dubious sidelong glance. “Out of a can?”

“You think I can’t make chili?”

“I find it highly unlikely you found the time.”

He relented. “My mother made it, so you’re safe. No can was involved.”

“I’ll make cornbread, then. Let’s stop by my house so I can change, and I’ll grab the stuff for that.”

There was no doubt cornbread was out of the realm of his culinary experience, so he didn’t argue that one. He’d never made chili either but was convinced he could if handed the recipe and the incentive of having Samantha sit across the table from him, but it had been much easier to just accept his mother’s generous offering.

He wasn’t about to mention the ring again, or rings now, actually. Either one of them. Yes, they were rediscovering their romantic feelings for each other, or at least the sexual attraction, but he wasn’t ready to do much more than cautiously see if other than in bed, they still liked each other.
